The quests inDragonflighttakeWorld of Warcraftplayers through a journey across time to the Black Empire and back, but new whispers from N’zoth imply that the Old Gods may have a part to play in the new expansion. WhenWorld of Warcraftlaunched in 2004, Old Gods were little more than the natural progression of a concept introduced inThe Frozen Throne. The infamy generated by C’thun as one of thehardestWorld of Warcraftbosses of all timehelped establish the Old Gods as a credible counterpart to the Burning Legion in the pantheon ofWarcraftvillains.
From the imprisoned Yogg-Saron inWrath of the Lich King, to the legacy of Y’shaarj inMists of Pandaria, players dealt with the physical manifestations of the Old Gods for mostWorld of Warcraftexpansionsin one way or another. This journey seemingly culminated with the defeat of N’zoth in the lastBattle for Azerothraid, but recent data heavily implies the death was not as final as one might expect.

During the “Big Time Adventurer” storyline inDragonflight, players chase Chromie and Eternus through pivotal moments in Azeroth’s history, and one of its featured locations ends up being the Black Empire at the height of its power when Old Gods ruled Azeroth fought amongst themselves for primacy. The players are bombarded by whispers from each of the four Old Gods – C’thun, Yogg-Saron, Y’shaarj, and N’zoth. Though their words have mostly been heard by players in the past, N’zoth’s lines are all new, and seem to hint at the present-day story inWorld of Warcraft.
Namely, N’zoth speaks of players hunting Iridikron and the other Primal Incarnates deep below the earth, in theupcoming zone forWorld of Warcraft: Dragonflightteasedin a post-Raszageth cutscene. According to the theory put forward by Wowhead, this Old God introduces the notion that Y’shaarj may be coming back, and that his brethren have already succeeded in corrupting the world soul of Azeroth – potentially as a result of the events that occurred inBattle for Azeroth.
Though one should take an Old God’s words with a grain of salt, theMysterious Coin questline inWorld of Warcraft: Dragonflightimplies that the Void may have a part to play in the immediate future of Azeroth, and the Old Gods are very much the heart of that cosmic portfolio. Though it remains to be seen if this theory bears any fruit, the Primal Incarnates, Old Gods, and the Infinite Dragonflight have all been established as veritable factors, but only one of these forces will end up becomingDragonflight’s defining villain.
