When it comes toThe Sims 5, none of us can contain our excitement. Although the game has yet to be announced, it’s almost a certainty the game is coming and it’s only a matter of time the announcement will be dropped now thatThe Sims 4is full of expansions and game packs. There’s a lot riding on the fifth installment in the series, too. Many are hoping the game will fix some long-standing issues Simmers have with the current game. However, there’s also a lot of good we want to see kept in the future game. Without further ado, let’s have a look at five thingsThe Sims 5needs to ditch fromThe Sims 4and five it needs to absolutely keep.
10Keep: Whims
The Sims 4introduced whims are a replacement for wants from the past games, and so far it’s been a pretty cool system. Whims can be related to objects around your house, people around you and they’re different depending on your Sim’s personality.
They change all the time, and if you don’t like a whim, you can easily just get rid of it, only for a new one to appear. Whims act as a guide through the game and give you fun little mini-quests to do with rewards at the end of it.

9Ditch: Three-Trait Limit
When making a new Sim, we’re given three slots to fill with the traits that we want. While you can earn more traits as a reward later on in your gameplay, it’s a bit of a shame we don’t get more slots in CAS. After all, inThe Sims 3,you could pick five traits for your Sim and really solidify their personality.

Since customization is such a huge part ofThe Simsfranchise, it feels only natural there should be as much of it as possible, especially with something as important as traits that determine how your Sim interacts with the world.
8Keep: Laptop Mode
Who else remembers just how impossibleThe Sims 3was to run, even on decent computers? You’ll be surprised to know that reportedly even the developers themselves struggle to run all expansions and stuff packs at the same time. This was a huge flaw in the game, and something the team swore to remedy.
Now, inThe Sims 4, even people with laptops and low-end computers can safely run the game, even if it is at the cost of the quality of graphics. Still, at least people are able to boot the game in the first place! Accessibility should be an important priority in the future as well.

7Ditch: Limited Swatches
The Sims 4definitely broke a few hearts by cutting out many key features it had introduced inThe Sims 3. The ambitious color wheel and the selection of patterns had given us so much customization in the previous game, and now we’ve taken a step back, with limited swatches on hairs, clothes and build and buy objects.
Some items don’t even have swatches to begin with, which is annoying for passionate creators who just want to leave their own fingerprints. No matter the cost, we really believe the swatch system must either be abandoned or more swatches should be introduced.

6Keep: Emotions
Along with whims, emotions are a central feature ofThe Sims 4because of how much color they bring into the game. Emotions are dynamic, dependent on moodlets your Sim gains from certain interactions. It makes the otherwise robot-like Sims feel just a tiny bit more alive, and not as paper thin as they often get called inThe Sims 4.

Emotions that are dynamic should be here to stay. Not including them in the next game would take away a lot from immersion and gameplay, as well as just plain hilarious moments when your Sim dies from laughter or embarrassment.
5Ditch: Strict Lot Placement
While the worlds themselves look absolutely gorgeous and some of them even have some well-kept secrets, sometimes we wish we could place a lot somewhere different or fill up the empty spaces of the map. This system should not carry over toThe Sims 5.
4Keep: Graphics
If there’s one thing thatThe Sims 4definitely excels at, it’s just how good the game looks. For those who can afford it, running the game at the highest graphic settings is a real treat. The lighting system, dynamic weather, and vibrant nature really helps to make the game come alive and just look appealing.
The colors are much more saturated, which does give it a sort of cartoon-like look, but this isn’t necessarily a bad thing. Hopefully,The Sims 5will only improve from this, if any improvement is even needed.

3Ditch: Loading Screens
Whether you’re a long time Simmer or a total newbie, we all hate loading screens. While they’re not as infamously unbearable as the originalThe Simsloading screens that could take a solid 5-10 minutes depending on the player’s computer, they’re still a bit irritating, especially between neighboring lots or locations that are relatively close.

In a life simulation the less time we spend waiting to actually play the game, the more immersive the experience will be. This is why the developers should consider abandoning the loading screens and making the game open world. Alternatively, we could have small open areas that you load separately, but once you do you can access everything in a set vicinity.
2Keep: Detailed CAS
WhenThe Sims 4was first showcased, everyone was absolutely thrilled about CAS mode. It was unlike anything we had ever experienced, even if it did take us out of the small room with the mirror we had been confined to for the last two games.
The slider system is so much more intuitive, allowing for highly detailed customization to make your Sim look just the way you want them to. All in all, CAS is amazing, which is why The Sims 5 should definitely learn from it.

1Ditch: Rabbit Holes
Perhaps the worst flaw inThe Sims 4is how little your Sim can actually do. Many of the more interesting activities are not available for you to experience. Instead, your Sim will be sent into oblivion, through a rabbit hole adventure which is narrated with dialogue boxes.
Rabbit holes in almost any type of game are bad and lazy. Given how much they’ve received criticism, we’re hopeful that inThe Sims 5we’ll get to experience our Sims' lives first hand, above all else.
