TheSpider-Manspinoff movie Silver Sable, announced at Sony, the production home of theSpider-Versefranchise, seems to have been shut down, according to its former writer.
Since the character’s debut in 1962,Spider-Manhas been one of the most popular heroes to ever grace the pages of Marvel Comics, with each new generation of fans falling in love with Peter Parker and the large collection of Spider-People and various other allies and acquaintances that have been introduced over the character’s lifetime. One such character is Silver Sable, a mercenary and CEO of a multinational corporation who debuted in the comics and subsequently appeared in other related Spider-Man media. Recently,Silver Sable was revealed in aSpider-Mantrailerfor Insomniac’s highly successful video game adaptation.
After initially being considered for a live-action series alongside Spidey frenemy Black Cat, whosimilarly debuted in theSpider-Manvideo game adaptation, Silver Sable was set to get her own solo spin-off at Sony Studios. Now it seems that fans have gotten confirmation that the project is dead via a statement given toComicBookby Lindsey Anderson Beer, the scribe previously attached to write for the project. “It was something that Sony was looking at and then, as far as I know, is not currently developing,” the writer admitted. “I had to hop off that to another project at the time. I was only on it as – people hire writers as, it’s called a ‘weekly,’ I was helping them out. But yeah, I’m not sure.”
From these comments, the Silver Sable movie has seemingly gone the way ofBad Bunny’s El Muerto movie, which also recently fell through at Sony. There is some precedent to this, as even as far back as 2020, producer Gina Prince-Bythewood also seemed unsure in a talk withThe Hollywood Reporter. “I really love that project, and I do hope it can still happen in some way. It keeps going through different thoughts,” she recalled. “First, it was going to be the two of them, and then the decision was made to separate the two … Now, there’s a thought of, ‘Hey, maybe we put it on Disney+ as a limited series,’ but I loved it more as a film with the two of them. So, my hope is that one day it can still happen.”
The Silver Sable movie’s cancelation is unsurprising, as the sheer number of ill-fated attempts at giving various characters their own projects iswhy Sony’s Spider-Man spinoffs don’t work. As the mainline Tom Holland-led films veered more towards MCU canon fare, any attempts at spin-offs that weren’t similarly integrated into the multi-billion-dollar franchise were always liable to be fraught with issues, both in production and fan interest. While there was more excitement among prospective viewers concerning Silver Sable than the ill-fatedMorbiussolo film had, the risk was still ever-present on Sony’s end.
Despite this bad news concerning the Silver Sable movie, fans have a lot to look forward to with upcoming films and shows, with theSpider-Verseshort film getting an official synopsisahead of its release and many of Sony’s other projects still scheduled to go forward as planned. While there’s still the SAG-AFTRA strike going on, the end of the WGA action means that newSpider-Manprojects can continue being written at Sony.
