The trailer opens with a chilling vocal melody and presents an ominous question one wouldn’t expect, atop frightful images of various people brandishing nightmarish smiles.

The footage is an unrelenting dive into the torment consuming Bacon’s character, whose patient indicated that she was seeing something no one else could see. The unseeable entity not only viciously murdered the rattled patient, but nineteen others as well in a mystery that the psychiatrist must solve before the evil extinguishes her own life. The premise feels somewhat likeDavid Robert Mitchell’sIt Follows, which also dealt with an invisible supernatural presence murdering only those who could see it. Smilecomes from first-time feature director Parker Finn, who also penned the script for the upcoming horror film. The film won the Special Jury Recognition Prize and now will look to tell an even bigger story on a larger stage.

The upcoming film’s September release will lead nicely intothe Halloween season, providing enough fright for audiences looking for a horrific experience. One can assume Finn’s success withLaura Hasn’t Sleptwill carry over into the brand-new film, but the addition of more elements to complete the story may rob the film of its established strength. Finn may elevate the story with more resources and support, but only time will tell if his vision comes to fruition.
