Resident Evilis notable for its modern renaissance of remakes, “demakes,” and other such reinterpretations in the franchise.Resident Evil’s twenty-five year historyaccounts for many different control schemes and gameplay mechanics that have ultimately divided and married fans, but has nonetheless appealed to a wide playerbase who may prefer one gameplay style over another.
Demakes typically refer to reverting a modern game backward to a retro platform’s graphics and control schema, while remakes either modernize it or alter something fundamental about it. But while Capcom has indulged inmodern remakes of originalResident Evilgameslately, fans have continued to demake or otherwise mod and alter other classicResident Eviltitles.

Aydan Watkins has shared a mod called “Resident Evil: Survivor Redux” that respectively zooms out fromResident Evil: Survivor’s first-person-perspective and gives players a third-person perspective instead with fixed camera angles, just like that ofResident Evil 2orResident Evil 3: Nemesis.Resident Evil: Survivorand its other spin-off sequelsmay not be the most iconic of the franchise due to their emphasis on arcade-style light gun shooter gameplay, Aydan’s remake may perhaps interest fans in the game with traditional gameplay that fans know and love.
Because of these preferences, other fans and modders have also “demade"Resident Evil7’s first-person-perspectiveinto a classic PlayStation-style game in low-poly third-person, as well as traditional fixed camera angles and tank controls. This demonstrates that while newer entries in the franchise have been hugely successful, there is still a devoted fan-base for the early PlayStation era ofResident Eviltitles that made such a significant impact on survival horror.
Another popular remake in theResident Evilfranchise has been the recentVR adaptation forResident Evil 4, which is also receiving fan-made mods. Interestingly, Aydan’s remake ofResident Evil: Survivoris filed underResident Evil 2mods, which would seem practical sinceResident Evil: Survivorprimarily recycles its enemies fromResident Evil 2.Resident Evil 2and its sequel were officially remade and modernized to great effect, and it seems as though Capcom’s remakes will continue in third-person while its new, original entries might pursue first-person instead.
Aydan’sResident Evil: Survivorremake mod impressively recreates the original game’s imagery and atmosphere, but gives it a fresh take with a different camera perspective and traditional controls. Fortunately, it is also a completely playable mod that the creator has distributed forResident Evilfans to get their hands on in the form of a demo that is “now available to download and play!”
Resident Evil: Survivoris available now on PC and PS1.
