Red Dead Redemption 2is being turned into a novel, which is being written by a fan of the title who says they are adapting it for their mom. With video games being transported to the big and small screens, such as the upcomingThe Last of UsandFalloutTV series, it’s interesting to see that someone is turning to literature instead of visual media. WhileRDR2has yet to be optioned for cinema or television, it certainly seems like something that would make an ideal adaptation to another form.
Given that it contains one of the mostrealistic and detailed environments in all of gaming, featuring a slew of characters who just go about their day, there is a lot of potential to explore other stories in Rockstar’s epic release. Whether the game will ever be turned into a film or TV show cannot be said at this stage, but for the time being, someone is making a novelization about the world of Arthur Morgan for personal reasons.

As spotted by PCGamesN, Reddit user WockySlush722 has uploaded an excerpt from their upcoming written adaptation ofRed Dead Redemption 2, which covers the opening sections of the game. Beginning with a “ferocious blizzard” in which Arthur and Dutch look for John Marston, it seems as though the novel will be a direct retelling of the main story. The user says they are writing it for their mom, who “loves stories, but can’t play video games.” There’s no indication on when the story will be fully written, especially as it appears to be in the early stages, but others have praised the work so far, with one person finding it sweet that they’re doing this for their mom.
Over the years, there have been severalbooks that have been turned into games, such as the retro point-and-click adventureI Have No Mouth And I Must Scream, originally written by Harlan Ellison in 1967. However, by far the most famous adaptations of novels into the digital sphere are Dmitry Glukhovsky’sMetroseries and Andrzej Sapkowski’sThe Witcher. A shout-out also toBioShock,which took the philosophy of Ayn Rand’sAtlas Shruggedand turned it into one of the most influential horror FPS games of a previous generation. What WockySlush722 is doing, though, is the complete opposite, turning a video game into a page-turner.
As for Rockstar’s 2018 game itself, there’s no indication ofwhat the future holds for theRed Dead Redemptionfranchise. No doubt many would love to see a third installment, but with the developer now focusing onGTA 6, the epic Western series may not make a return at all.
