The Pokemon Presents on February 26 delivered a lot of expected news to Pokemon fans.New Pokemon Snapupdates were practically guaranteed and thePokemonDiamondandPearlremakeshad been hyped so much by that point their reveal was almost perfunctory. But one thing Pokemon fans did not expect was the reveal ofPokemon Legends: Arceus, an open-world game in the Pokemon universe. Fans have been requesting a game like this for some time now, and initially it seemed all talk of the game was excitement. But now that the initial high of the reveal has left, fans are voicing their concerns.
Pokemon Legends: Arceusis not set in a completely new region like most other new Pokemon games, but rather it takes place in a feudal era of the Sinnoh region as aprequel to theDiamondandPearlgames. The trailer forPokemon Legends: Arceusthat debuted during the presentation depicts a serene environment where Pokemon wander about in rolling plains at their leisure. Trainers are able to explore the wild and see individual creatures moving through the grass, and just like in games before, trainers can battle these with their own Pokemon friends.

Early Sinnoh certainly looks tranquil, but fans are worried thatPokemon Legends: Arceuswon’t be able to fully live up to the open-world concept in the trailer. A new Pokemon experience means new challenges for developer Game Freak, and not everyone believes the company can pull it off. Some fans have voiced their concerns about the emptiness of world in the trailer, low frame rates, and unrealistic Pokemon behaviors.
Pokemon fans haven’t always been pleased with the way Game Freak has handled Pokemon games. WhilePokemon SwordandShieldintroduced the Wild Area, fans have also been critical of the game’s recycling of content from earlier Pokemon games and general lack of innovation.
Others have decided to point out issues with the Nintendo Switch itself, believing the current version of the console can’t hold up to whatPokemon Legends: Arceusmay require. Though open-world gameBreath of the Wildhas been massively successful on the Switch (and Pokemon fans have been quick to compare the two games), some fans feelPokemon Legends: Arceusshould be destined for the Switch Pro.
There are also plenty of fans who are still very excited aboutPokemon Legends: Arceusand are optimistic about what the game will have to offer the Pokemon community when it releases in 2022. Like any fan base, Pokemon fans are a divided bunch and the debate overPokemon Legends: Arceuswon’t end anytime soon.
Pokemon Legends: Arceusis due out in early 2022 on the Nintendo Switch.
