Hogwarts Legacybuilds backward from established lore and iconography to imagine what the wizarding world and Hogwarts would be like in the late-1800s. In doing so,Hogwarts Legacycomes up with a fairly unique narrativethat strays away from nostalgia for the most part, despite a lot of its landmarks and professors containing obvious nods to events and characters that fans know from present day lore. Not every character inHogwarts Legacyis given the full attention they deserve, though, with most of its focus being given to companion students.

Certain quests are exclusive to each Hogwarts house, and while that is an excellent idea that could have offered a ton of replayability, the quests themselves are extremely brief.Nearly Headless Nick is only encountered in Gryffindor’s exclusiveHogwarts Legacyquest, for example, and ghosts in general feel fairly underutilized in the narrative. Then there’s Peeves, a frustrating poltergeist who enjoys getting students into trouble. Peeves appears as an NPC intermittently, but is never fully realized in the way thatBloodborne’s Patches or Micolash are utilized.

Hogwarts Legacy’s Peeves is Hardly the Nuisance He Could Be

Peeves is known as a disruptful irritance at Hogwarts, and it is a wonder any students are able to make it to class on time or complete each school year with their sanity intact while he is around. Peeves is comedic on a student’s best day, but could be damaging to their mental health on their worst day.

However, Peeves’ troublemaking inHogwarts Legacyis no worse than tattling on the player and Sebastian Sallow after finding them in the library’s restricted section; otherwise, players find him appearing through the floor to startle students or mock them as they try to enjoy time to themselves. It would have been exciting to see him take on more of a role that was interpolative to the player’s experiences, such as interrupting them on their way to class or causing them to be late by robbing them of their wand and other items.

Patches_A_Thing_Most_Secret_A

Peeves has played this role in retroHarry Pottergames, which is why his simple role as an obtrusive NPC inHogwarts Legacyis underwhelming. InHarry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone, Peeves steals Harry’s parcel and players must race them through a dodgy obstacle course laden with chocolate frogs and red Bertie Bott’s beans on crooked wooden beams.

Peeves Should Have Been Modeled After Bloodborne’s Patches or Micolash

Moreover, Peeves could have taken direct inspiration from Patches or Micolash fromBloodborne.Patches is a recurring character in many FromSoftware games, always a fiend who attempts to manipulate or trick the player, who then has the option of killing him or seeing what the scoundrel has to offer as an NPC.

His actions often displace the player and put them in horrible situations after pushing them into a hole or gorge, for example, and that would have been the perfect vibe for a poltergeist like Peeves.Bloodborne’s Micolashserves as an annoying boss fight in which players chase him down and attempt to outwit him in order to finally land hits, and this could have also served as a proper way to introduce Peeves. Peeves would not need to necessarily be a boss himself, but either of these approaches would have been far more engaging than what fans received in the final product.

Hogwarts Legacyis available now for PC, PS5, and Xbox Series X/S. PS4 and Xbox One versions are due for release on April 4 and July 25 for Switch.
