Summary

Grinding Gear Games’Path of Exile 2is bringing six new classes to the series, including the Mercenary class, which is quickly proving to be its most popular ahead of release. However, in addition toPath of Exile 2’s new Mercenary classand six of the first game’s seven core classes, the sequel is adding a Sorceress class to the mix. The developer has already shown off gameplay for the new Sorceress class, and it seems likePath of Exileveterans and newcomers alike will enjoy what it has to offer.

Despite everything thatPath of Exile 2’s Sorceress class is bringing to the table in terms of customization and gameplay, it may have difficulty holding a candle to its current competition inDiablo 4’s Sorceress. Over time, the Sorceress class inDiablo 4has proven its worth, andDiablo 4fans who happen to tryPath of Exile 2once it launches may judge its new Sorceress class accordingly.

At one point in time,Diablo 4’s Sorceress was one of the game’s worst classes. In fact,Diablo 4’s Sorceress was once considered the worst version of the class the series had ever seen. One of its most notable problems was its lack of resistance and therefore its inability to tackle more challenging content such as higher-tier Nightmare Dungeons. While the Sorceress class inDiablo 4is indeed a high-risk, high-reward class due to its raw power and fragility, it was once too fragile, resulting in most regular Sorceress players abandoning the class altogether. Fortunately, Blizzard released an update for the game in August 2023 that included some major buffs for the Sorceress, improving its survivability in late-game content.

Diablo 4’s Sorceress Has Come a Long Way

Today, the Sorceress class still dies rather easily, but it is now more balanced with the powerful spells and abilities it brings to the table. For good reason, the Sorceress is one of the most popular classes to play inDiablo 4, alongside the Necromancer. It functions as a pure caster class, specializing in three elements — Fire, Lightning, and Ice — with each element providing a unique approach to combat. As such, the class' popularity is arguably justified on account of the massive damage it can inflict and the varied methods available for doing so.

Path of Exile 2’s New Sorceress Class May Have Difficulty Competing With Diablo 4’s

According to the official gameplay walkthrough forPath of Exile 2, many of the Sorceress' skills will be familiar to those who playedPath of Exile, although they have been revamped for the sequel and casters like the Sorceress. One of the biggest takeaways from what Grinding Gear has shown so far, however, is thatPath of Exile 2’s Sorceress doesn’t seem nearly as powerful asDiablo 4’s. Furthermore, based on what has been revealed so far, most of its skills seem to revolve around lightning and ice, although it can be assumed fire will find its way in there at some point. Nevertheless, it still aims to bring what appears to be some exciting, fast-paced gameplay to the series.

OfPath of Exile 2’s twelve classes, it could very well be that its new Sorceress class turns out to be one of its best, and the limited amount of gameplay shown so far might not do it justice. Time will tell, however, as the release ofPath of Exile 2draws ever nearer, whether its new Sorceress will prove to be a formidable rival toDiablo 4’s. At the very least, it will be something new forPath of Exilefans to try as they once again traverse the dark world of Wraeclast in search of foes to destroy and new skills to unlock.
