When it comes to fighting games, story DLC is a bit of a rarity. So when NetherRealm Studios announced thatMortal Kombat 11would be receiving astory add-on in the form of its Aftermath DLC, most of the fighting game community was likely shocked. Not only did the expansion give players an interesting continuation of the critically-acclaimed story that was already inMortal Kombat 11, but players were given 3 new characters to play as with Fujin, Sheeva, and Robocop.
While it’s only been 5 months since the release of Aftermath, players seem to have been speculating on what new DLC could come toMortal Kombat 11next. Recently, Ed Boon has been hinting at new content on his Twitter account, with many players predicting it to be thefamous purple ninja, Rain. And while new characters seem like an inevitability when it comes to fighting games in general, there is a possibility thatMortal Kombat 11could see another DLC similar to Aftermath.

The Case for More MK11 Story DLC
Currently, there are two prominent rumors when it comes to future DLC forMortal Kombat 11. One of these rumors, seemingly leaked by Warner Bros. and corroborated by reliableMortal Kombatleaker thethiny, indicates that 6 new characters will come soon as part of a new Kombat Pack. These fighters includeHarley Quinn, Smoke, Takeda, Michael Myers fromHalloween, Mileena, and Sektor. And while this leak would seem to confirm a previous leak that thethiny made in regards to Mileena coming toMortal Kombat 11, it would also disprove fan speculation of Rain’s involvement and would further indicate that the highly anticipated Ash Williams fromThe Evil Deadstill will not be making an appearance.
The other rumor also comes from thethiny where they indicate thatMortal Kombat 11has plans to add 19 new characters to its roster. While this doesn’t necessarily contradict their other leak of a new Kombat Pack with 6 new characters, it might be tough for some players to accept having to spend $20 on multiple Kombat Packs with one character left over, and this is where a new Aftermath-like DLC could likely help.
A new Aftermath-like DLC could offer NetherRealm an opportunity to integrate popularMortal Kombatcharacters back into the game through a well-told narrative experience. With characters like Cyrax and Sektor already playing a small role within the base game’s story, NetherRealm could offer the players a chance to see what these characters are up to, either during the events of the original story, or in a new story that takes place following Aftermath. NetherRealm has already accomplished this before withSheeva playing a minor supporting roleat first but taking a more active role when she was added as DLC in Aftermath.
There is also the chance that NetherRealm could do a combination of both Kombat Packs and narrative DLC. This has been its approach so far, with players taking on the roles of Nightwolf, Shang Tsung, and Sindel during Aftermath’s campaign, despite the characters being released as part ofKombat Pack 1. And while it’s hard to know exactly what NetherRealm will do to fillMortal Kombat 11’s roster, it might be hard to convince players to spend $60+ on the characters alone, and new story DLC could sweeten the deal by a lot.
Mortal Kombat 11is available now on PC, PS4, Stadia, Switch, and Xbox One.
