Thestory of theMetrofranchiseis a bit long and involved. The series tells the story of people living in underground subways in Russia after a nuclear war left the world devastated. The first game,Metro 2033, is based on the novel by Dmitry Glukhovsky of the same name. Glukhovsky went on to write his own sequels to the book while the games went in their own direction. The writer has also spent time as a journalist and has vocally opposed Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Unfortunately, this opposition seemed to have caught up with him in a roundabout way.

In June 2022, Russian authorities ordered thearrest of theMetrowriter. This was specifically for Glukhovsky speaking out against the war in Ukraine which falls under a law that prohibits journalists from discrediting Russia’s armed forces. Earlier this week he was sentenced to eight years in prison for the crime and is one of many journalists and politicians who have been convicted of such a crime since the war began. The twist to it all is that Glukhovsky doesn’t actually live in Russia at this point and was tried and sentenced in absentia, making it a mostly symbolic gesture on the part of the Moscow courts.
The war in Ukraine has devastated the country in ways that are difficult to comprehend. Dmitry Glukhovsky himself has since gone into hiding in Europe and his current location is unknown. With this sentence hanging over his head, however, it is unlikely he will be able to return to his home country anytime soon.
