Throughout the game’s nearly 13-year-long history,League of Legendshas featured a wide variety of unique and creative skins for its large roster of characters. Fromthe pop star-inspired K/DA series of skinsto homages to popular media like the magical girl anime-inspired Star Guardian skins, Riot Games has continued to produce visually striking alternate looks for its characters. Now, the newest set of cosmetics coming to the game takes heavy inspiration from one of gaming’s most iconic franchises.

A poll held by Riot Games early last year allowed fans the opportunity to vote between three different themes to be featured in a future skin line forLeague of Legends. Players were asked to choose between the dark and moody Crime City Nightmare, the slick and suave Debonair 2.0, and thePokemon-inspired Monster Tamer themes. While Crime City Nightmare took a convincing victory with almost half of the global votes, Debonair 2.0 won China’s vote and Riot also said they would consider Monster Tamer later on. Now,League of Legendshas officially unveiled Monster Tamer skins for three champions.

A new video posted to theLeague of LegendsTwitter account shows off the first three skins in the new Monster Tamer thematic with Veigar, Kog’Maw, and Lulu featured. The three skins feature each champion with smaller companion characters made to resemblethe style ofPokemon’s fantastical creatures. Each skin also features several smaller references to thePokemonfranchise. One of Veigar’s abilities creates PCs similar toPokemon’s storage system and Kog’Maw’s recall animation features its tiny creatures emerging from tall grass.

League’s newPokemon-inspired cosmetics would not be the first time the MOBA has paid homage to other popular video games. The Arcade series of skins takes inspiration from classic arcade games and has featured multiple classic game-inspired alternate appearances for champions like Riven and Miss Fortune. Other skin themes like Warring Kingdoms and Beast Hunter have references to popular modern game franchises likeDynasty WarriorsandMonster Hunter. Riot has even included some references to itsown games likeRuined Kingas skins withinLeague of Legends.

League of Legends' new Monster Tamer skins come fresh off one of the return of one of the game’s most popular skin lines. The most recent update saw the return of the Star Guardian skin line with a plethora of new magical girl skins for several champions including Akali, Syndra, and Taliyah.League of Legendsalso has several major champion reworks in development forcharacters like Udyr and Aurelion Sol.League’s Monster Tamer skins pays tribute to one of gaming’s most legendary franchises and should be a great pickup forPokemonfans.
