Sega and Paramount Pictures’Sonic the Hedgehogmovie is ahuge box office success, and it is now the film adaptation of a video game with the biggest opening weekend in history. Now Sonic fans have come out of the woodwork to support the blue blur, including Santa Monica Studio’s Art Director Raf Grassetti.
Grassetti uploaded a collection ofSonic the Hedgehogpieces to Twitter this morning that showcase the series' main trio — Sonic, Miles “Tails” Prower, and Knuckles the Echidna — in a live-action, realistically furry style that is similar to the new movie’s aesthetic. While the artist is primarily known for his work on theGod of Warfranchise, he’s also apparently very in-tune with Sonic meme culture given that the pictures were followed up with a “do u kno de wae” gif.

This isn’t the first time Grassetti has made waves by posting art depicting characters from other video game franchises, though. In fact, just last month he showed his appreciation for another group of anthropomorphic animal characters by depictingStar Fox’s Fox McCloud in a similar styleon Twitter.
While theSonic the Hedgehogmovie did not feature Sonic’s immense collection of friends and rivals from the games, it didtease characters like Knuckles. This may mean that that a sequel could reunite Sonic, Knuckles, and Tails, and given the film’s financial success thus far, it is very likely that a follow-up is at least being discussed.
Even if Sonic did not get to see his usual friends throughout the movie, it was still full of references that show how much the production team really cared about the source material. Fans of the fastest thing alive likely picked up on the nod to the famous Sanic Hedgehog meme, for example, but there were also direct allusions toSonic’s appearance inSuper Smash Bros.and other smaller deep-cuts included.
All of the positivity currently surrounding the long-time popular video game character has clearly galvanizedSonic the Hedgehogfans, and that includes well-known figures like Grassetti. The movie’s director Jeff Fowler has saidthere’s a bright future ahead for Sonic, and it will be exciting to see if the work being done by fans informs a potential sequel and beyond.
