A growing trend in video games is an in-universe mini-game, card game, dice game, or something of the sort. It’s a great way to immerse players in a world especially when the game and rules are designed around said universe. Not to mention, everybody loves a fun table game, and fantasy NPCs have to pass the time in some way. For upcoming action RPGFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn, that game is called Sebo.

While it wasn’t the first in-universe mini-game,The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt’s Gwentcomes to mind as one done right and a major push in the trend. Another one isAssassin’s Creed Valhalla’s Orlog, which immerses players in the Viking world. Plus, while Vikings obviously did not play Orlog, they were known to play dice and table games, which really pushes that immersion. Then, there’s alsoQueen’s Blood inFinal Fantasy 7 Rebirth. It remains to be seen ifFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn’s Sebo strikes those same chords, but like Gwent and Orlog before it, it is deeply rooted in the world’s lore. Game Rant recently spoke with creative director Simon Dasan about Sebo, how it works, and how it involves the world and NPCs.

Flintlock: How to Play Sebo

Triangles are important inFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn, as the Door has been depicted in the shape of one. It should be no surprise then that triangles are important in Sebo, which is played with a collection of coins. There are special coins players can also find in the world to change how the game is played, but at its core, it’s two rounds of attack/defense where players try to form a triangle on a board. Each player has a few coins, there is a limited number of moves, and the board organization ensures each game is tweaked a little bit.

Players simply need to find someone to play with them, and while there’s always someone to play a camp, there’s a reason to pursue games from new NPCs. As Dasan explained the game,

You play two rounds where you have a certain amount of turns to move coins around a small board and make a triangle or stop your opponents from making a triangle. Players should definitely try their hand at Sebo a few times – it can be an excellent source of bonus Reputation, and there are dozens of players to be found around the world (plus Baz always has time for a quick game or two!).

Given that Reputation doubles as a currency for outfits and as a method ofleveling upFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn’s skill tree, garnering some bonus Reputation will definitely not hurt. This is an incentive to seek out NPCs, but also to seek out new coins in the world. Special coins have certain limitations, but they can otherwise change the rules of the match. Dasan explained how these coins tie into Sebo and into exploration:

Sometimes you encounter opponents with new coins that have advantages over a normal coin, but only one of these can be played per person, per round. These special coins can be found across the world of Kian in wells, so we encourage players to explore and be adventurous to get the upper hand in Sebo.

The dead andgods may be everywhere inFlintlock: The Siege of Dawn, but it’s important to stop and smell the roses. Sebo is one way to accomplish that, while involving players in the world all the same.
