Past & Character

He was born on February 20 and is22 years old during the events ofFire Force. Benimaru was an orphan that got adopted by Hibachi Shinmon, Fire Chief for the Asakusa firefighters. Hibachi’s wife died before they could have any children, so he was looking for an heir for his position and techniques, and found one in Benimaru. He taught him how to fight and control his powers, but he also was very strict and brute with him. Konro Sagayima often interfered between them as a true caring father figure, in hopes Benimaru realized about Hibachi’s good intentions, but instead Benimaru feared Konro for most of his childhood. Thanks to his training and living with non-other than the Fire Chief, from a very young age he was a member of the fire department and helped dispatch infernals like it was nothing.

His childhood definitely had a great part on developing his personality. Benimaru is like Hibachi in a lot of ways, short-tempered, has a deep love for Asakusa, honest to the point of hurting others feelings at times. He enjoys being the hero of the people and seems to be in control of the situation most of the time. He’s very proud and prefers to be called Shinmon Benimaru, often referring to others by their family name first. He usually carries around a serious or even bored expression, but from time to time he also reveals one of the most unique smiles of the show.

Power and Abilities

Benimaru isa hybrid or 5th generation pyrokinetic, in other words, with the powers of Second and Third Generation. This allows him to both ignite and control his own flames and manipulate flames from external sources. On top of that, the sheer power of his fire and the way he can precisely control the flames is completely unmatched. He surpassed the power of Hibachi who was also known as an extremely strong pyrokinetic. With the ability to copy anyone’s techniques after seeing them briefly, he can easily defeat any of the other captains, plus he still has his own techniques, like the Crimson’s Moon Sun Wheel, an attack almost too powerful.

With only that he would be one of the strongest characters inFire Force, but he also has immense speed and extraordinary reflexes, tremendous physical strength and durability. Another of the traits he acquired during his childhood training was mastery in hand-to-hand combat with the Iaido Martial Arts. He also mastered Hysterical Strength and developed poison resistance. If there is anyone that is the complete packagein the series, that’s Benimaru Shinmon.

Ideology and Role as Captain

He is considered and often referred to as proto-nationalist. That’s because in the post-apocalypticworld of Fire Forcehe and his father Hibachi still use traditional Japanese values and customs. He also rejects the Emperor rules and the church of the Holy Sol to the point of despising them. Benimaru only cares about Asakusa and defends their free will over anything. His dream world is one where everyone in Asakusa can get drunk with peace of mind.

Despitehis overwhelming powerand his strong values, he is not the most confident leader of theSpecial Fire Force. He would rather work alone than have to lead any group of people. Nevertheless, he cares about Asakusa and tries to protect them and help them at every chance, and also has strong feelings for a lot of people as shown by his reaction to having to put an end to the life of someone he once knew.

How Everyone Sees Him

A good description should take into consideration not only his abilities, but how others see him. He might hace a difficult personality, but his acts often speak louder than his words. Almost everyone in Asakusa views him as true hero and benevolent character. Other members of theFire Forcerespect him and see him as mentor even though he is still young. The mentor facet becomes literal in some cases, as he trained Shinra and Arthur proving to be more than capable teacher.

At the same time, his out-of-the-norm powers incite both fear and reverence. Konro compared him with the god Kagutsuchi for howhe wields his flames and masters every ability. Benimaru a variety of different nickanmes such as “Acala”, the “Destruction King” or “Asakusa’s King of Destruction”. He might in fact destroy some building from time to time, but everyone knows that he is just doing everything in his power to keep Asakusa and its people safe and happy.
