Diablo 4just revealed an official timeline of many major historical events across the franchise. This new timeline shows the biggest turning points from across its various games and expansion packs that led to Lilith’s return to Sanctuary inDiablo 4.
The world of Sanctuary is one rife with war and violence. As the fourth full title in the franchise,Diablo 4continues the storywith its darkest chapter yet, featuring the return of Lilith, Mother of Sanctuary and daughter of the Prime Evil Mephisto, Lord of Hatred.

The officialDiablo 4Twitter recently shared a brief timeline of events spanning every game set in Sanctuary, includingDiablo Immortal. According to the timeline,Diablo 1took place in 1263 of the Sanctuary calendar, andDiablo 2took place over the following two years.Diablo Immortaltook place five years later, withDiablo 3occurring 15 years after that. However,Diablo4 is taking place a whopping 50 years after the events ofReaper of Souls.
Lorath Nahr, the Horadric scholar and author ofthe upcomingDiablo 4lore codex, theBook of Lorath, made his first appearance duringReaper of Soulscinematic. As players saw during the beta, the aging Horadrim scholar plays a major role inDiablo 4as both narrator and guide. Considering he was probably no older than his early 20s duringReaper of Souls, Nahr is likely pushing his late 60s or early 70s inDiablo 4. Judging from his hunting acumen and physical strength, he is doing quite well for himself despite his age.
Players loveDiablo 4’sgorgeous new timeline. It is succinct and easy to follow, laying out the major events in and surrounding the game franchise clearly. The captivating art is reminiscent of ancient Horadric scrolls and would fit perfectly in theBook of Lorath. Many were especially surprised to find the new game took place after such a long timeskip, and they are excited to discover what other ways Sanctuary has changed as they explore theopen world zones ofDiablo 4once it releases.
Considering humanity was nearly wiped out duringDiablo 3: Reaper of Souls,Diablo 4has an understandably dark feel to it. The atmosphere is bleak and hopeless and is more evocative ofDiablo 2thanDiablo 3orImmortal. Though it is clear Sanctuary is on its back foot, players are more excited than ever to see how the conflict between Lilith and Inarius shapes the world inDiablo 4.
Diablo 4will be available June 6 for PC, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X/S.
