Summary
Destiny 2’s latest seasonal activity, The Coil, is arguably the best seasonal activity the game has ever had. The Coil is a multi-level mini-dungeon of sorts that gets increasingly difficult as players progress. A full run of the activity consists of four “pathways,” each of which has unique obstacles to overcome and debuffs that can prove fatal if not kept at bay. A boss also lies in wait at the end of each pathway, which simultaneously makes the most challenging aspect of The CoilDestiny 2’s Full Extinguish modifier. While Full Extinguish is active, the entire team will return to orbit if they deplete their shared pool of 21 revives, and they will lose any progress they made in The Coil previously.
Despite beingDestiny 2’s best seasonal activity, however,The Coil still has its issues. While some of these issues are avoidable and/or trivial, one rather glaring issue cannot be ignored, as it ultimately revolves around the score that players accumulate as they make their way through The Coil. Scores don’t always matter inDestiny 2, but they matter almost more than anything else in The Coil, as a fireteam’s score determines the rewards they receive upon completion of the activity.
Glass Collectors Shouldn’t Be Players' Only Method for Achieving a Platinum Score in The Coil
Glass Collectors Are Currently the Only Way for Players to Achieve a Platinum Score
Specifically, achievinga Platinum score of 150,000+ will earn players the best rewardsonce they finish a full run of The Coil. To add to their score, players are required to collect Wishing Glass as they progress through the activity, which can be obtained by defeating enemies, breaking pots, and defeating Glass Collectors. Unfortunately, it is nearly impossible to achieve a Platinum score without pursuing and defeating an NPC called a Glass Collector before they escape.
The only othermethod for obtaining a Platinum score in The Coilis to find a room where the enemies continue to spawn unless a certain objective is fulfilled and to purposefully not fulfill that objective to keep the enemies coming. However, normal enemies drop an extremely minuscule amount of Wishing Glass compared to some of the activity’s other sources, so this method would take quite some time. This leaves players desiring a Platinum score with few options but to find and defeat the Glass Collector.
The Coil’s Natural Hazards Can Make Pursuing Glass Collectors Unnecessarily Difficult
Generally, in the latter half ofThe Coil, a Glass Collector will spawn and begin fleeing the fireteam. Not only are Glass Collectors quick and evasive, but The Coil’s natural hazards make pursuing one unnecessarily difficult. Throughout the activity, players will encounter platforming hazards, other dangers like spikes that can instantly kill them, and frequent waves of enemies who relentlessly fire at players until defeated. If players are killed at any time during their pursuit of a Glass Collector, the NPC may escape, along with the Wishing Glass it possesses.
Another problem is that these hazards not only make traversal difficult, but they can also prevent players from collecting the Wishing Glass that Glass Collectors drop upon being killed. Many players have reported defeating a Glass Collector, only for the Wishing Glass it drops to fall off of a cliff. Those players are then unable to collect the Wishing Glass necessary for a Platinum score and are forced to restart the activity or give up altogether.
It’s unfortunate that suchan exciting activity inDestiny 2could have such a frequently unavoidable problem. Thankfully, this is the activity’s biggest issue. If Bungie was to fix this issue, The Coil might be considered near-perfect. Until then, players will need to pick up the pace in their pursuit of Glass Collectors and hope they don’t lose precious Wishing Glass in the process.
