DC has recently shown off its upcoming Blue Beetle movie, and given the positive response to the trailer, now seems like the perfect time for the comic publisher to keep the momentum going and create a Blue Beetle game. While the movie has already generated a lot of buzz, Blue Beetle’s powers and villains would also be perfect for a video game. WithSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice Leagueand theWonder Womangame still to be released,DCshould consider introducing a new hero in gaming by creating a Blue Beetle video game that stays closer to the comics, similar to how Marvel handled Spider-Man.

As DC continues to work towards James Gunn’s vision on the big screen and the Arkham-verse continuation inSuicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, there may be a need for a fresh face. WithBlue Beetle getting a long-awaited movie, DC needs to follow in Marvel’s footsteps and give the young hero the Spider-Man treatment as a game could help greatly expand the character and show fans a different version. With three Beetles to pick from, multiple excellent storylines, and the possibility of expanding the video games into a narrative universe of their own, it makes complete sense for DC to green-light a Blue Beetle video game.

Who Is Blue Beetle?

One of the most iconic heroes in the 21st century, partly due to his involvement in the Justice League vs. Teen Titans movie, the Blue Beetle character has gone through three changes over the years. Starting out as Dan Garrett, an archeologist who discovers the Blue Beetle scarab in Egypt, the mantle has been passed down twice, once to Garrett’s protégé, Ted Kord, who did not actually use the scarab, and then to Jaime Reyes. Each of these characters hasplayed important roles in the Blue Beetle storyline, with Garrett cementing the powers and abilities, Kord showcasing the limitations of the scarab, and Reyes bringing the character into the spotlight.

Blue Beetle receives his power from a scarab, a piece of alien technology that was designed to eliminate all life forms on a planet. However, the scarab on Earth, named Khaji Da, was damaged and did not carry out this mission. While wearing the scarab, Blue Beetle gains powersof flight, the ability to create various weapons, energy absorption, increased healing, protection from hazardous environments, and even the ability to create countermeasures against enemies. Only Garrett and Reyes were able to wield the scarab since Kord discovered that he was incompatible, so he did not display any of these powers.

DC Should Look To Marvel’s Spider-Man For Inspiration

DC already has a perfect blueprint to look at when creating a Blue Beetle game,Marvel’s Spider-Man, which has been hailed as one of the best games on the PlayStation in recent memory. After Marvel revealedTom Holland as the new Spider-ManinCaptain America: Civil Warand gave the new web-slinger his first movie inSpider-Man: Homecoming, the company released a Spider-Man game that did not follow the movie’s continuity. Instead,Marvel’s Spider-Mangave players the opportunity to play as a more experienced Spider-Man who had been active for over a year at the point, which worked great since his origin story has been shown so many times.

DC should consider something similar if the Blue Beetle movie emerges as a success since it can not only improve the popularity of Blue Beetle but could also shed light on the two others who held the mantle before Jaime Reyes. A Blue Beetle game could also lead to some great storylines being introduced into DC’s video game universe, including Infinite Crisis andpossibly even some Teen Titans arcs. Further, as a member of teams like Teen Titans, Justice League International, and Young Justice, his introduction to gaming could lead to many more DC characters gaining a way to enter the fray.

As one of the more popular characters in DC, Blue Beetle deserves to be showcased in various different ways, giving fans a chance to fight some of his iconic villains such as The Black Beetle and La Dama. Further, his connection to various teams and important storylines in DC makesBlue Beetle the perfect introduction to bringing other charactersinto gaming. Whether DC decides to release a game with Garrett as the Beetle, or if they pick to follow closer to the movies and give fans the chance to play as Reyes, Blue Beetle’s many fantastic storylines and villains would make him a great fit for the gaming world.
