On Thursday, June 20,Critical Rolestreamed the live show recordingof Episode 98 of its thirdDungeons and Dragonscampaign, which took place the previous Saturday at The Greek Theater in Los Angeles, California. Hosted byDimension 20dungeon master Brennan Lee Mulligan, the exciting episode featured a climactic battle against a powerful demon, as well as the addition of a new character to the party.
However, the live show ended with a surprise twist. Near the end, the characters found an ancient artifact that gave them a vision of the past.Critical Roledungeon master Matt Mercer then left the stage, allowing Mulligan to take the seat to end the show. The episode stinger, and a follow-up video later shared on Twitter, then revealed “Downfall,” a three-part flashback campaign taking place throughout July that features a star-studded cast:Critical Rolecast members Laura Bailey, Ashley Johnson, and Taliesin Jaffe, guest stars Noshir Dalal, Abubakar Salim, and Nick Marini, and Mulligan as the dungeon master.
While past roles of the mainCritical Rolecast are significant, fans are certain to recognize Dalal, Salim, and Marini as well. Dalal is a prolific voice actor with prominent roles inMarvel’s Spider-Man 2,Mortal Kombat 1,Star Wars Jedi: Survivor,Horizon Forbidden West, and evenLeague of Legends. Salim is best known for his role as Bayek inAssassin’s Creed Origins, but has recently starred inHouse of the Dragonas Alyn of Hull, and found great success with indie hitTales of Kenzera: Zauas both its creative director and the voice actor of the eponymous protagonist. Marini, on the other hand, focuses on live-action performances, such as his appearance inCobra Kaias Twig.
Mulligan himself has appeared inCritical Rolebefore as the guest dungeon master forCalamity, an incredible side story that told the tale of the fall of the city of Avalir in ancient history. Now, theDimension 20DM returns toCritical Roleto tell another tale during the Calamity – but this time, following the story of six divine figures of Exandria. “Downfall” can be watched with no previous knowledge ofCritical Role, so new fans can safely watch it without fear of spoilers.
