NewBatgirlbehind-the-scenes images show Michael Keaton’sBatmanin the upgraded bulletproof batsuit fromThe Flash.Batgirlwould have continued that storyline before it was canceled during its post-production stages. One ofThe Flash’s endings was changed by James Gunn. The initial plan would have reportedly seen Ben Affleck’sBatmanstuck in a different part of the multiverse and reaching out to Barry Allen, similar to how Flash reached out to warn Bruce Wayne inBatman v Supermanfrom a different timeline. The ending would have also teased Keaton’s Batman and Calle’s Supergirl teaming up with Barry one more time for aCrisis on Infinite Earthsadapted story steered by the previous Warner Bros. regime. However, before getting to this point, the previous regime had plans to releaseBatgirl, which would have followed this new timeline and introduced Leslie Grace’s Batgirl opposite Keaton’s Batman.RELATED:Brendan Fraser Says Batgirl Cancellation Jeopardizes Trust Between Studio And FilmmakersNewBatgirlmovie imagesmysteriously leaked online that show more of Keaton’s Batman in what is the same clock tower from the third act ofBatman(1989 andBatgirland Batman face-to-face in what appears to be a gothic version of Gotham City with cathedral-like architecture. The Flashchanged the timeline that Barry ends up in, such as actor J.K Simmons from the DCEU continuing as Jim Gordon. Insider ViewerAnon says this universe looks like Tim Burton’s Gotham, claiming they had seen the movie before it was scrapped and saying it was “solid.”
DespiteDC Studios CEO Peter Safran callingBatgirlunreleasableand that it would have hurt the brand. However, speculation from Kevin Smith, ViewerAnon’s comments, and behind-the-scenes images tell a different story. The Flashopened the multiverse forBatgirland even the Snyderverse to co-exist as Elseworlds stories likeJokerandThe Batmanwith the DCU, so for WBD to spin a narrative around the quality ofBatgirlto justify not releasing it, only for the studio to receive a tax write-off for doing so, may not instill confidence that the new leadership knows what is best for the brand or that their heart is in the right place.
Assuming Warner Bros. Discovery releases the alternate ending scenes ofThe Flashthat more or less set upBatgirl, either in a director’s cut or in the special features of the physical release, then releasingBatgirlwould not conflict with the upcoming DCU, as long as it was marketed as being in its own DC Elseworlds timeline. However, it has been reported that thestudio destroyed any hopes ofBatgirlbeing releasedfor tax write-off purposes.
Batgirlwas canceled by Warner Bros. Discovery.
