Both have been on many fantasy and RPG fans' radars since, and now that they will finally be released in the latter part of the year, will likely have to contend with each other for players' attention and time, which may make for a heated battle between them.
Avowedis set in the world of Eorafrom Obsidian’s prior CRPGs,Pillars of Eternity, and will shift to the locale of the Living Lands, where a mysterious disease called the Dreamscourge is destabilizing the region. Meanwhile,Dragon Age: The Veilguardwill continue on fromDA: Inquisitionand the rending of the Veil that separates the spirit world from the material, focusing on the repercussions of how the magical tear in reality is affecting the land of Thedas and other areas. Even beyond this surface similarity, both will also feature a variety of characters and lore that will expand their already extensive world building, promising exciting and surprising revelations.
Avowed and Dragon Age: The Veilguard Could Duke it Out for Best Fantasy RPG of the 2024 Fall Season
With both games releasing close together, and containingdeeply intriguing stories and compelling characterswithin the same genre from established and well-liked developers who have proven themselves before, it will be quite interesting to see how they compare. The narrative similarities could mean that both titles will need to stand out in other ways, honing in on their respective strengths to distinguish themselves from each other and in the eyes of fans.
AvowedandDragon Age: The Veilguard’s companions, quests, and other designs look to offer a variety of playstyles and story agency that could serve to elevate both and make them equally enjoyable. Obviously, players need not necessarily choose one over the other, and fans could be in for a double header of excellent experiences, resulting in an even better “Fall Fantasy RPG season” than 2023. The two could provide healthy competition, and may end up being some of the best genre games in the latter half of the year. Their proximity might be a boon for gamers as both hold the potential of being quality new works from two of the most prolific studios with good track records producing well-liked titles.
